dont know what causes the metallic grinding sound.  My 89 100q sounds
really terrible when the ABS kicks in.  My wife's '98 Olds Intrigue emits
a very gentle clicking sound when the ABS system on her car engages.

I would guess that advances in ABS technology over the years has made
newer systems less noisy and probably more effective.
