antenna setup in 1991 100

Hi all,

I recently purchased my first Audi, a 91 100 and am really pleased to
find a community of Audi folks to help me maintain it. I've owned (and
still do own) several Volkswagens over the years, so the basic zeitgeist
of these fine automobiles is not entirely alien to me. However, I've
never encountered a vehicle with two antenna systems for the radio. Is
one of the antenna connections perhaps for the RDS system?

Here's my problem. The previous owner recently purchased an aftermarket
radio after the original died of the dead volume knob ailment. The
installers of the new radio really messed things up and I think I have
finally gotten the system to pretty much operate properly. The only
remaining problem is that the radio reception, especially AM, is not as
good as it should be. The reception did improve a lot after I connected
the remote power leads (4 white wires) for the rear amplifiers (mounted
on the speaker housing). I think some of the leads were for the antenna
amplifiers, but I can't say for sure. Before hooking up these wires I
couldn't receive AM at all.

Should I expect the Audi's antenna, which is in the rear glass I think,
to perform as well as a "normal" antenna that is external to the
vehicle?
