When I first bought my v8q about a year & half ago there was a thread on the
list about some owners of the early v8s who, when they complained about the
rotors warping got Audi to convert their brakes to something similar to the S4
set up. Several members posted some detailed comparisons between the two
systems. Ultimately the consensus of the posts, at that time, was that
eventhough the conversion resulted in a lighter unsprung (whatever that means)
weight the raw stopping power of the UFO's were better.
In researching the early history of my v8, I found through Audi's records that
the rotors were replaced 3 times under the new car warranty (The original
owner only put 30k on the car in its first 8 years) - but for some reason Audi
never offered to convert them.
I've toyed with the idea of pressing the issue with Audi - but because of my
personal inertia, the age of the car and the fact that I can pretty much can
take out the warp through my twice weekly hi speed drives - I've not pursued
it.
Like you, I am easy on brakes. On my 87 5k auto I routinely got >than 60k to a
set of front pads and 110k on the rears. However on the v8 the front & rear
pads only lasted about 25k. I guess that can be attributed to the hp, weight
of the car, and perhaps the warped rotors.
