Yes, I had exactly the same problem on my '91 200q, right down to the
dash thump temporary cure. I tracked the problem down to a bad solder joint
on the lower speedo connector block - these are the green blocks on the main
instrument panel circuit board that look like PC two-pin jumper blocks. The
solder joint which connected the block to the main board was bad. It looked
OK, and it had obviously been resoldered once, but a process of elimination
fingered it as the culprit and I haven't had a problem since I resoldered
both blocks. I recently saw an Audi TSB on this repair as a cure for
intermittent speedo operation on '89 - 91 100/200 models - it also seems to
affect the high beam/turn signal indicators and the inner dash lights, but
only when the headlights are on.
