... what signs do you have that the tranny is on the way out? If you are
talking about keeping the car stock otherwise I see no reason that a
properly cared for tranny in a 4kQ won't run a very long time. The tranny
in my '85 has over 210K miles and seems to be as strong as ever ... and it
wasn't necessarily that well cared for by the PO ... after I bought it I
replaced the tranny fluid ... and when I added the prescribed amount of
Redline I found I had a leaking drive flange seal. I drove the car to work
yesterday (due to the rain keeping me off the Beemer) and did actually note
how nicely and crisply the shifting was on the car ...
If you are having engine work done and are separating the tranny you
definitely should think about doing the clutch and checking the shift
linkage ...
