Dipstick in or out?

Finally picked up the tranny dipstick for my '92 100S ($11 from Impex, 01F
321 431A). Is there any harm leaving the dipstick in the filler tube vs just
having the tube capped? The manual says that some cars come equipped with
the dipstick, and others didn't. I think this is stated because there were 2
auto trannies used in the '92 100 FWD's (097 vs 01K). I have the later build
01K tranny (same used in the '93-'94 100 FWD's). I know its a dumb question,
but I'd hate to lose the damn thing.
