A-4 1.8t engine question

Hi, I have a quick question about my engine on my 1999 A-4 1.8t...here
goes:
I was driving to a movie going in tiptronic, well anyways I came to a
light and felt like giving my car a nice accelerated start, so I floored
it, anyways to make a long story short, I forgot to shift and since I
was in tiptronic, it shifted for me only after the rpm's bounced at
almost the redline.  Then after I did this I continued driving when a
funny smell came from my engine and when I got to the movie I realized
that there was some smoke coming out of the front grille.  So thinking
nothing of this I went in, watched the movie, came out, drove home, and
everything was fine, no problems since.  Does anyone know exactly what
happened/why and if it damaged anything or not? thanks a lot
