Probably intermittent leakdown.  By shorting the fuseholder, you asked
the ECU to run the fuel pump even if the engine wasn't running - this
re-pressurized the system and allowed the hot start.  Your subsequent
cold starts used the cold start valve, which doesn't need that much
pressure to operate it.

If I'm right, it will happen again with the new relay.
