I did the same type of install (rear deck) for 6x9 in a Jetta.  It is
more of a pain than it is worth.  In my 90Q I did the same thing Daniel
did, upgrading the rear door speakers but I also added a amp.  I
upgraded all the speakers in the car and added a sub.  To save room for
the amp I put the 5 channel amp on a custom panel on top of the spare
tire under the stock tire cover.  Note: I also installed fans to cool
the amp due to loss of air circulation.
