I don't know about changing the color of the illumination in that radio but I
do know it might be easier for you to get a new 7 series radio.  You can
adjust the color perfectly to your car even the nighttime brightness levels.
I have had one in my car sense about a week after I bought it about 8 months
ago and I love it.  The sound quality is better to because the 7 series Blau's
are built in Germany not in smaller developing countries like the 5 series,
aspen, reno, denver, and lasvegas, and 3 series, to many to list.  You can
call Blaupunkt at 1-800-323-1943 and talk to them about your idea.  I talked
to John who was the head of Research and Development when I called he was
really helpful with all my questions even though they weren't that technical
he might be able to help you out if he is still in that position.  Good luck
keep me informed and the list as I am sure a lot of others would like to know
about this one.
