I experienced the same noise from my distributor about 2 years ago, the only
thing I could come up with was that there was excessive play in the shaft
and that the rotor was hitting the inside of the cap or it was just the
noise coming from the bearings, either way I was not going to wait till it
failed so I purchased a new one, which includes a new cap and rotor for like
$180 from GPR. much better than getting stuck on the side of the road.
