Here's where I'm confused: do you mean the inlet would draw in
air in that situation, or the outside would draw air away?  In
particular, what would be the effect of putting a cone filter
behinde the grille with the smaller end facing the grille?
That would make the airflow go across the sides of the filter
where air is supposed to enter.
