Route 66 runs through the northern part of Arizona (near Flagstaff), which
puts it 160+ miles out of Bob's way. If he can prioritize driving experience
ahead of time, I would recommend the following since I happen to know what
he's planning on driving back to Chicago...

Take SR 60 East to Globe, Arizona, then pickup SR 70 East all the way to SR
191, which will turn into SR 78 at Guthrie, AZ. From there, take SR 78 East
up and over the mountains -- this is one of the most awesome roads I have
driven in Arizona! -- and cross over the border into New Mexico, where you'll
pick up SR 180 just past Mule Creek.

Take 180 north to to SR 12, and then take that until you hit SR 60. Head East
on 60 (which will take you through the middle of the Very Large Array, as seen
in the movie "Contact) until it ends at I-25 and take that north to until you
can pick up 60 East again. Take that all the way to Vaughan, where you pick
up SR 54, which will dump you out onto I-40 at Santa Rosa, and you can then
trundle all the way back to Chicago.

I've driven these roads several times over the past two decades. They're not
very heavily travelled and are either a lot of fun to drive and/or scenic or
worst case, able to be driven quickly. I once hit 130 mph in my 200q on SR 60
as I was driving through the VLA and SR 191 in Arizona is like driving over a
scaled-down version of the Alps. I've got a photo that I took at the top of
the pass and you can see the road winding its way around the foothills for 15
miles back ... good thing he'll have AWD and a turbo under the hood to keep
him amused! :^)
