4kq Windshield Washer Fixed

For the record: Fixing a dead windshield washer pump and switch.

I fixed the windshield washer pump on my '87 4kq this weekend. It was
interesting because the windshield wipers would go back an forth upon
pulling back the stalk, only when the pump was unplugged. There was 12v
at the plug, but it wasn't running the pump.

Problem: Dirty switch.

Solution: Pull the steering wheel (carefully pull off the center piece
and unbolt the wheel), then removed the three regular-head screws that
hold the blinker and washer assemblies. Because of the cruise control
wires, I wasn't able to take it all off, but I was able to pull it out
enough to see two thin copper paddles. You can push one into the other
with a screw driver and the pump should work, but don't do what I did
and short it out by touching the key at the same time. I then scraped
and sanded as much as I could and hit the whole assembly with Radio
Shack electrical contact cleaner. I reassembled and it works great
now.

Good luck,
