89 100 E strange wheel problem

Hi,
I've been lurking on the qlist since I received my mother's 89 100 E. I
have never needed anything fixed quickly enough to risk doing it myself
(other than bulb replacement, which I can handle). Now back from
vacation I took the car out to make sure it would run Monday morning,
put it in reverse and as I stepped on the gas felt a resistance similar
to the effect of backing over something. Checked, nothing, continued to
back up and still felt the resistance. Got out again and noticed a long
streak in the dirt under the back passenger tire, evidently it had not
been turning. I pulled it back it the garage and heard a loud thud from
the rear area and could see the tire now turning. Hand brake was not
engaged as it has not worked in years. Any ideas?
