Audi's circuitry is poorly designed - it's not failsafe.
The various senders that warn of low pressure are all 'open circuit'
when everything is in order - they close to warn of low pressure and
light up the light. This means it's easy to turn off an annoying light
- just pull the connector off the sender.
However criminally dangerous this might be, I see it often. Sometimes
done by people who should know better, and sometimes done in order to
rip off whoever's buying the car. Thus item one on your list should be
checking that all of the senders in the hydraulic system are connected
and that there's a functioning bulb in the dash.
(One exception: Some early WRs didn't have a 'supply OK' sender. If
the pressure regulator on these cars is replaced, the new one has
such a sender that has to be left unconnected. Should only affect a
very few 1982 ur-quattros.)
