RE: The smell of burning oil...

Well, with 43K on the clock this is far less likely in your case, but I had
a similar situation. Turned out I smoked the clutch a bit. Smell was very
similar to burning oil, and given that I had the stereo on, I didn't
actually hear the engine race, I just happened to be looking at the tach and
saw it jump w/o the clutch depressed. Another place to check is your valve
cover gasket. Even if it was replaced, you might double check it. The tork
specs for the 10v valve cover gasket bolts are 7ft/lbs. - rather light. The
shop that did mine torked the bolts to the factory specs, but didn't mention
anything to me about double checking them later to see that they didn't back
up after heating and cooling. Mine did. They were almost finger tight
after 5,000 miles. Might be worth a look.

Subject: The smell of burning oil...

Anyone feel like throwing a dart at what this might be?

Myself, my wife, and my son are in my '92 100CS yesterday on our way home.
At a highway junction, on the on ramp to Rt. 95 (from 128, if anyone cares)
in MA, I drop down into 4th gear because its a
right-into-a-fairly-tight-decreasing-radius-left on ramp, and as I come out
of the corner onto the straight I floor it. WOT in 4th, up to about 4200
rpm and shift up to 5th. The whole car is then consumed with the smell of
burning oil.

In retrospect, I should've pulled over and popped the hood. I didn't, and
now I'm wondering what the hell is going on. I think I'm going to have to
perform another WOT and see what happens on that same on ramp. It seems to
me that oil leaked SOMEWHERE, and I'll be less than pleased seeing as how
the gaskets were all just replaced at the end of Oct '98.

Any other 12v'ers have, or having, something similar?
