black deposits in intake runners

Hi all,

This weekend I removed the throttle body on my NF (10v non-turbo) engine
to adjust the throttle position switch. The inside of the throttle body
(on engine side) as well as the inside of the intake manifold were
covered with a thin baked-on layer of oil. This stuff was really cooked
on--I had to use lots of carb cleaner as well as scraping to remove it
from the throttle body. I would expect some oily residue from the
crankcase breather to be present in the intake but this caked on stuff
leads me to wonder if the engine was severely overheated by the previous
owner. Runs great though and there aren't any other symptoms of trouble.
Could the hot exhaust gases recirculated by the EGR system cause this?
Also, when I bought the car, the rubber crankcase breather hose was
collapsed and the metal tube was pretty much blocked by crud. What
happens if the crankcase isn't allowed to breathe?

MM
