A6/4 brake squeal
Listers,
Yes A4/6s do squeal and at the very speeds the poster mentioned. The
company line, Audis that is, is that the high metal content is the reason.
They claim to use one pad for the whole world market. They claim the cold
pads are the reason for the squeal. Some cars do it more than others.
Now for a solution, or to put it off for a while the dealer will do what we
call a "deglaze service".
The pads are removed and scuffed to remove the mirror perfect finish. The
rotors recieve a surface treatment with a 3m disc in an air drill. A
grease is applied to the backs of the pads and the right spots on the
carriers for the pads. It does work and for some people for a very long
time. In my experience it is the grease more than anything else that does
it. I've been putting a bit of grease in the right spot on brakes for 20+
years. I've never owned a car with brakes that squeal.
Now for the above brake service there is an Audi op-code for the service
dept to get paid by Audi. If your dealer says it doesn't I'll post the
op-code to the list. I don't remember it right now.
For anyone not under warranty just put some brake grease on the back sides
of your pads and the squeal will stop.
