Cleaning o2 sensor

A few years ago, I pulled a few 02 sensors from a box and saw they had the
whitish coating on them. I heated them with a propane torch until they
were cherry red. When they cooled, the whitish coating was gone. I did use
one of them and saw no difference. I wanted to know if the o2 sensor
possibly was cleaned by my having done this.

I read that the case of it is very sensitive to chemicals. Is this true? I
just though the part that goes in to the pipe is the critical area.
