Re: Hydraulic Pump Rebuild - Day 6 (long)

I think you're right on about stripping the allen recess. I believe that the
quality of hardware is such that if you use a quality tool of the right size
the only way you could strip one is if you don't clean the debris out of the
bottom of the recess and the tool doesn't sit all the way down. Want to quess
how I know? Yup. When I first got the 85 5Kt I tried to change one of the
flywheel reading sensors bolted to the block. Blasted out many truly stuck
fastners since without further mishap.

BTW I have never seen one of these leak but I figured I reseal my
pump(skipping them) and 10 minutes after I started the car they would leak. I
always change all the seals, including the front shaft seal(gives me an
opportunity to check the bushing). One last thought on this subject. First
time I did one I tried to remove the pulley drive hub. Use a gear puller.
Aerokroil. More gear puller. More Aerokroil. Commence with the beatings.
On to the torch. More Aerokroil. More beatings. Break gear puller. Grab
the real big gear puller. Still no go. More beatings. Finally get the big
torch. Get it real hot and it fairly explodes off the end of the shaft, the
pump and puller flying in opposite directions. Four hours nearly straight
working time. 55k miles later and not a drop of Pentosin out. Latest one I
did in under 20 minutes but with bigger impact driver and a 20 ton hydraulic
press. See it does get better.
Sorry so long, Phil. Are you still paying by the byte? Let me know and I'll
try to control my ramblings. Discussing things seems to have a theraputic
effect. I can hardly feel all those bashed knuckles anymore.
