Body work - advice appreciated!

Hey!

I need the advice of the collective. I sent my car into a body shop to have
a little repair work done. Being one who likes to save $$, I disassembled
the relevent portions (bumper, fender, grille), found an aftermarket fender
for $50, and found a shop that would replace the fender, fill and paint
numerous door dings and paint the entire Driver's side for $650.

So, I stop by last evening after work to see how its coming along - and the
fender's fit is terrible!

The guy tells me that the fender is bad, but that they horsed it as well as
they could, sprayed is and that's as good as they can get it. They never
called me when they had trouble fitting the fender.

Now the guy just tells me that he's trying to save me $$. If he said the
fender didn't fit, I could have returned it before he painted it.

I don't buy his explaination. This is a body shop. Shouldn't they have the
tools to bend, grind and reform the bad parts? Don't body shops deal with
this stuff all the time? It would seem that fenders might bend while in
shipping and that bending them back is a common job (this is what they tell
me happened).

What is your experience?

Jason
