The original G50 oil in the transmission is a synthetic so I wouldn't
think that putting in the Redline MT90 would damage/shrink the seals
like putting changing over to sythetic in an engine. Besides, it seems
to me like the transmission seals wouldn't gunk up like engine seals
because there aren't any introduced contaminants like in an engine from
combustion byproducts. I changed to Redline MT90 (GL-4) in the
transmission and Redline 75/90 GL-5 in the rear differential about 9
months ago immediately after I got me car and haven't had any leaks.
Audi says it's not necessary to change them, but I figured my car was
approaching 13 yrs old and it might be a good idea. One question I have
is that Blau sells Castrol 75/90 synthetic gear oil which they say is
for both the trans and rear diff. This is an API GL-5 oil, Audi specs
GL-4 for the transmission. I thought that a GL-5 oil in a GL-4 trans
would hasten the trans demise, especially to the syncros, because the
high pressure requirements create a much more corrosive oil. I for one
would _never_ put GL-5 oil in my GL-4 trans.
