A nice night's entertainment

Roger and I had made a date for last night - to strip the exhaust
manifold out of his ticking ur-quattro (the old white one - 1983?) and
get the head down to the engineers to get the studs out. The plan was
to rebuild tomorrow.

Of course, one of my clients calls and offers me a free dinner - so we
moved the mechanicing back to Wednesday.

All went well until we hit two problems. The first was the upper turbo
-> downpipe flange nut - the one nearest to the manifold. I don't know
what I used last time, but the 1/2" drive 19mm socket we used this time
was a pain to get on and a bigger pain to turn. I've just bought a 3/8"
drive 19mm semi-deep for the rebuild. Anyone else have trouble with
this nut on an early ur-quattro?

Second problem was the wastegate support bracket. I was a little
unprepared, because the MB engine doesn't have one. Roger's WR has
_TWO_ of the sods. 035 145 880 is on the microfiche - but this car
also has one to the base of the wastegate. Weird.

The FACOM stud removers proved their worth again, and Roger is now off
to buy a set. Studs come really easily if you take half a turn,
lubricate, and then take them back the half-turn before bringing them
out.

The bad news is serious radial play (0.6mm?) in the fresh air end of the
turbo.
