What are these MBenz Lights?

What are the auxilliary lights I see mounted on the bumper of older
(1980'ish) Mercedes Benz?  There are some of these in the U-Pull Yards and
I'm wondering if they might be a worthwhile addition on the bumper of one
of my cars.  These lights are round, about 6 inches in diameter w/chrome
trim, and have a clear lense with an H-3 bulb.  They are about the same
height as the regular headlights.

My >guess< is they are driving lights.
Does anybody know for sure?

I've been thinking of installing Hella XL's because what I need most is
auxilliary headlights, not high-beam/driving lights, for the mostly around
town driving I do.
