Ok, I'll take this one.
If they are over priced, they won't sell. If they don't sell, the
manufacturer goes broke. Since enough people are buying them, enough people
think they are "worth it", i.e. _not_ over priced.
You can't just "grind a hot cam". It takes a lot of reseach and development,
which is reflected, of course, in the price.
It's market size, among other things.
SB chev cams can be had for under $100, my Fiat cam was nearly $300 15 years
ago, and Audi cams are higher than I'm willing to pay.
"Higher than I'm willing to pay"
I put a cam and lifters, alumunium coated headers and terrific intake
(Edelbrock Performer, 1st Gen) on my chevy for under $600Cdn. Would have
been half that shopping the US mailorder firms, had I lived there. I
woundn't even get a cam for that for my Audi.
Rons Parts has headers for...$500, I believe, and cams for a little more.
"Higher than I'm willing to pay"
BTW, Todd, beware cheap cams. They'll never line up, or tune correctly,
because they are simply inaccurate. No slag against Elgin Cams meant
whatsoever, not familiar with their products.
