Right. It's just that with the fan running at the same time, I (for one)
had a hard time telling if the pump was running, not knowing what a
working pump should sound like. The radiator fan's not exactly quiet! I
tried to feel whether the pump was vibrating to indicate operation, but
of course it was because of the fan shaking everything.

It's simple to pull that 1st stage fan relay, so that you can
concentrate on just the pump. Now that I know what a running pump sounds
like, I might not pull that relay, but I think it's especially helpful
when it's your first time with this system.
