Many thanks to those that responded to my plea for a replacement alternator
mount, especially to Phil Payne for noting the change in VIN numbers.  I
mentioned some of the speculation on the list about the other role(s) of
this mount to the shop manager at my dealer, Harper's Audi in Knoxville.  He
stated that the primary (i.e., design) purpose was to restrict engine
movement under acceleration.  It just, coincidentally, becomes a place to
mount an alternator or to anchor tool #2084.  He said it did not serve any
purpose for crash situations.  

BTW, still need the mount.  I now have several possible sources thanks to
listers.
