Water pump R & R on I5/'83 CGT
I'm reading Scott Mockry's Web site and the Bentley manual in
preparation for replacing the water pump that failed yesterday on my
'83 CGT. (The Bentley manual *could*, I suppose, be more cryptic than
it is on finding information about the water pump, but only if it were
written by people who cut their teeth doing Unix man pages. But that's
another story.)
Before I get started, does anyone have any words of wisdom on the
process? Such asn an answer to the question, "Why the &%^$* did they put
the water pump INSIDE THE ENGINE???"
Am I really better off to remove the cam pulley to get the water pump
out? (That sounds so INSANE to me; I'm still somewhere between shock
and denial over this procedure.)
Before anyone asks, my timing belt is only about 20k miles old, I'm not
planning on replacing it. Oh, and of course the adolescent in me that
wants free horsepower is nudging me to ask if moving the cam timing one
tooth in either direction might move the power curve up or down the RPM
range enough to make a difference.... other than the obvious difference
of having the car simply not run, that is.
At least Linda @ Carlsen saves the day; my wife is heading there later
to pick up the pump at a huge cost savings over list (q-list rocks!).
But I tell you, anybody who's always wanted a fairly nice CGT could
probably pick mine up really cheap if you call at the right time this
weekend...
I'll be checking email regularly all weekend. If you're near Sunnyvale,
California and you'd like to exchange some of your moral support and/or
technical advice for a little pizza and beer, drop me a line and I'll
give you directions...
