Need Info on 83' 5000 turbo

Just saw an ad on the recycler:

83 AUDI 5000 Turbo, 4 door, sunroof, new brakes, runs good, $900 firm


I'm thinking of buying it. Back in the early 80's in France my father owned 
one. it was a 5spd and had a 170 hp  2.2  5 cyl turbo engine. From what I 
remember it was a great car, roomy and powerful. I remember, on the 
speedway in 5th gear and the turbo boosting happily it could dust a BMW 
528i in acceleration.
Now What's about the US model? I guess it's an automatic and doesn't output 
170 hp.
If anybody in the list who had experience or know about this model, please 
drop a line. Your knowledge will be greatly appreciated.
