Re: abs off light solved

Fred

re 200q abs off light that would not extinguish.

finally got around to having a look at this again. you were right
the abs off light and the right turn signal pins were side by side.

well I took the ip out and there it was. the abs pin was bent
over onto the right turn signal pin. result of this was the abs light
was always on and when the right turn signal was activated the
abs light flashed in sequence with the turn signal indicator.

at some point in this 200q' s lifetime someone did a very sloppy
job of removing and re installing the IP. when I first took it out
I found the spring for the display screen installed backwards.
this explained why display did not work nor could the clock be adjusted.

so I separated and straightened out the pin and voila... problem solved.
all dash functions now working.

thanks again for your help Fred.

don.

+AD4-Don+ADs-
+AD4-
+AD4- I powered the board using a 12v battery connected to the pin which lit
+AD4-the dash lights and the ground pin. I knew the problem was an intermittent
+AD4-contact since whacking the dash would correct it, so I started wiggling and
+AD4-tapping things on the board. When I got to the connector blocks, the centre
+AD4-section of dash lights went out and the signal lights and high beam
+AD4-indicator lit up, so I knew I'd found the problem.
+AD4- My problem only occured when my headlights (and dash lights) were on -
+AD4-when they were off everything worked as normal. If this the case with your
+AD4-car? Maybe you have a different problem. Perhaps you could power the right
+AD4-turn signal light, and trace the circuits for the ABS light to see where
the
+AD4-current leakage is. The board seems to be well built and quite robust, so
+AD4-it's hard to see how it could have failed. Is the power pin for the ABS
+AD4-light beside the pin for the right turn signal light in the connector?
Maybe
+AD4-a bad connector is the problem. If you powered up the board directly and
the
+AD4-ABS light did not come on, it would point to a bad connector or (horror of
+AD4-horrors) a bad wiring harness.
+AD4- I can see where the dealer would want to replace the circuit board - at
+AD4AJA-70/hour, they would soon have the price of a new board in the car if they
+AD4-tried this type of troubleshooting+ACE- They should not have told you you
needed
+AD4-a new board to fix the speedo, though, since they have a TSB on how to fix
+AD4-the board for that problem.
+AD4- I read the post you sent. The +ACI-jumper+ACI- blocks I am referring to are not
+AD4-on the speedo head, they are on the main printed circuit board itself. They
+AD4-are the only two on the board, so if you have resoldered them, they are not
+AD4-your problem.
+AD4- The +ACQ-45 you were quoted is a typical price for 15ml of Stabilant 22.
The
+AD4-stuff goes a long way - I have been using it on every connection I've had
+AD4-apart for over a year and have only used about 1/3 of the 15ml bottle. It
+AD4-has solved a number of transient problems for me. Some stereo shops and
+AD4-electrical supply houses also carry it.
+AD4-
+AD4-Good luck with resolving the problem. If you need more info, send me a
post.
+AD4-Let me know how it turns out+ACE-

+AD4APg-i did re solder the blocks that engage the pins connected to the
+AD4APg-speedometer.
+AD4APg-
+AD4APg-i've forgotten now, are there other blocks on the board?
+AD4APg-
+AD4APg-how did you hook up power to the board?

+AD4APgA+-Don+ADs-
+AD4APgA+-
+AD4APgA+- IP stands for instrument panel. I was just into mine (again) because
+AD4APg-the
+AD4APgA+-problem came back and I think I finally have it fixed (fingers crossed).
+AD4APgA+- Pull out the IP. Remove the white plastic cover from the back - this
+AD4APgA+-cover contains the autocheck circuit board. You are now looking at the
+AD4APg-main
+AD4APgA+-printed circuit board for the instrument panel - it contains all the
+AD4-lights
+AD4APgA+-in their nifty little holders. On the right side of the board (the side
+AD4-the
+AD4APgA+-auxillary gauges are on) you will see two green blocks which look like
+AD4APgA+-computer jumper pin blocks - one at the top of the board and one at the
+AD4APgA+-bottom of the board. These blocks are soldered to the board and engage in
+AD4APgA+-pins connected to the speedometer. I traced my problem to the lower
+AD4-block -
+AD4APgA+-I hooked up power to the board and when I wiggled the lower block, the
+AD4-dash
+AD4APgA+-lights would flicker out, the turn signal lights and high beam indicator
+AD4APgA+-come on, etc. From what I could trace of the circuitry, at least one of
+AD4APgA+-these pins is a ground connection.
+AD4APgA+- Remove the IP circuit board and turn it over. Resolder the block
+AD4APgA+-connections to the board- this was the problem on my car. The connections
+AD4APgA+-had come loose under the gob of solder and the defect was not visible.
+AD4APgA+-CAUTION - do not use a soldering iron higher than 30W or you will damage
+AD4APg-the
+AD4APgA+-printed circuit board. I used a 15W iron. Another problem which can occur
+AD4APgA+-with these connections is poor contact between the pins and the blocks -
I
+AD4APgA+-built up the pins with solder and used Stabilant 22 on the connectors.
+AD4APgA+- There is actually a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) out on this
+AD4APg-problem
+AD4APgA+-for intermittent speedo function and engine stalling on deceleration on
+AD4APgA+-1989-1991 100/200 models - the same fix will also address these problems.
+AD4APgA+-The connections had been resoldered on my car previously, probably under
+AD4APgA+-this TSB, but obviously had come loose again.
+AD4APgA+- If you need more info, send me a post. It's a pretty easy and quick
+AD4APg-job,
+AD4APgA+-but then I've had a lot of practice+ACE- BTW, if you have a drivers side
+AD4APg-airbag,
+AD4APgA+-things get a lot more complicated - my car is not equipped with one.

+AD4APgA+AD4-this sounds very similiar to my problem with the
+AD4APgA+AD4-abs off light. how did you trace it to a ground

+AD4APgA+AD4-how did you fix it?

+AD4APgA+AD4APgA+-will flash in sequence with right turn signal when turn signal is
