RE: The wonders of the WOT switch
The Wide Open Throttle switch? I have the symptoms you're describing on my
1988 Audi 90, and I posted my problem to the list. The only feedback I
received was "vacuum leak, vacuum leak, vacuum leak" (direct quote from Phil
:) ).
My 90 runs alright, idles a little rough and startup, but most annoying is
that the car will lug down to 400 RPM and stumble back up to idle every 4th
or 5th stop, and on occasion, it lugs to 400 RPM and can't recover, promptly
dying. The other times, the engine decelerates to 1100 RPM then settles
down to idle at ~900 RPM. Is this similar to your experience Dave?
I've swapped ISVs, I've run the output checks, I've pulled the codes, I've
adjusted the airflow potentiometer, I've replaced several vac lines, all to
no avail. I'm looking for alternative explanations and your WOT switch
solution is a glimmer of hope.
While running the Output Checks, I noticed that the Bentley indicated that
you should hear each component (CSV, solenoid, etc.) CLICK (or cycle) when
you depress the WOT switch. On my car, the clicks and cycles started
WITHOUT depressing the WOT switch. This lead me to believe that the WOT
switch might internally be stuck in the ON (depressed) position. I don't
have any way to test my theory, but I'm tempted to just replace the sucker
strait out and see what happens. What do you think? What did the switch
cost?
Thanks,

Subject: The wonders of the WOT switch
Patient: 89 200tqw
Sickness: Stalling on decel., low rough idle(~400)
Treatment: After repeated cleaning of the ISV and diligent search for vac.
leak decided to replace the WOT switch per Scott Mo. page. Presto! stable
idle (~8-900) no stalling on decel. BTW, it pays to follow the
instructions in the Bentley. Hooked everything back together after install
and finding continuity only to find that car would run up to 1200rpm on
startup and then promptlly die. Appears that when I snugged up the bolts
for the switch it rotated out of adjustment. Quick fix and back on the
road.
Hats off to Scott and his great diag. page.
