RE: The wonders of the WOT switch
No, it's apparently not a turbo/UrQ only thing. I was just looking through
my Bentley and found the illusive "dashpot" reference. According to the
Bentley, my '88 Audi 90 (NG engine, N.A.) has a dashpot located on the
underside of the throttle body. Canister type affair turned on it's side
and connected to the throttle linkage. The testing procedure involves
hooking the factory protractor device (again!) to the throttle linkage, then
opening the throttle to 12-14 degrees. It indicates that the dashpot
plunger should start to lift from the rest position at this point - "test by
slipping a piece of paper between the contacts". If not, you adjust it
until it lifts in the 12-14 degree range. Big kicker here is that even if
you could measure the degrees of movement, the book indicates that the
throttle body must be removed from the engine in order to get to the
dashpot! After taking a look, I'm inclined to agree. Double damn!
I also double checked the Output Test procedure, and NONE of the Output
Checks should operate in the absence of closing the WOT manually with your
hand. On my car, ALL of the Output Checks fire up immediately, in the
absence of any manual intervention. That's not right. I've gotta believe
that my WOT switch is stuck closed. But without this protractor device, I'm
really not sure what I can accomplish. I guess I have a weekend project in
the works... I'd rather watch Sebring... crap.
