[Fwd: Euro-Brakes: 88 Audi 80 Quattro, steering]

Guys (and girls), maybe someone can help this guy out. Reply directly to
him if you have any suggestions, not to iATN. iATN is a list for
professional techs, BTW, and they've been of great help to me several
times over the last couple of years.
TIA, John

Hey Audi techs, help me put some hair back. The first time
we saw this vehicle, we performed a rear brake job.
O'hauled calipers, new rotors. All was fine. 3months later,
the customer said the steering wheel would shake bad when
braking, but only around 60mph. She said this just happened
that day and did not come on gradually. We replaced all 4
front control arm bushings, (They were visibly shot.) and
overhauled the front calipers and replaced rotors. Same
problem. The tires were shot so she put on new tires and
had a 4 wheel alignment. Same problem. My techs cannot
figure it out. So now it's mine. I drove it. It shakes
violently( in the steering wheel) when medium braking, from
65-45mph. You cannot feel it in the pedal, but you can feel
the whole front end trying to throw itself off of the car.
It drives and brakes perfectly at speeds above or below
45-65. Should be easy to find somethig so violent. I did
runnout on the front rotors, .002 max. which made sense
because you do not feel it in the pedal. I replaced the
front ball joints that were marginal, no change. I had the
vehicle realigned and the new tires rebalanced because this
screams balance problem at me because it's so speed
dependant. The struts are tight and fine and all other
front end components are perfect. I'm going to rotate tires
and try again for shits and giggles, but they balanced and
spun up fine. Remember, it did this with old and new tires.
I've checkedthe rear suspension thoroughly too. Does anyone
have a F...n clue what I'm looking at here, or overlooked.
I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks people,

Mmaggot
