I like the magnet idea.  You don;t have to worry about accidentally
restricting flow somewhere and creating a problem.  Of course, it will
only pick up ferrous contamination.  So, if that isn't enough, maybe a
cheap in line fuel filter could be put in the outlet, bottom hose form
the expansion tank...  again, flow issues would worry me.  

Whatsmatta with a good drain, flush and reuse (or replace) filtered
coolant once a year?
