Re: 1987 Audi 5000 non-turbo
This procedure has been covered many times in the past - you should be
able to find several postings by searching the archives.
I have done two of these boxes on turbo's - I assume the mounting system
is similar on the non-turbo cars.
The major "anchor point" on these boxes is the double-sided adhesive
seal which glues them to firewall! You often have to work a sharp tool
between the bottom lip of the box and the firewall to cut the seal strip to
release the box.
The abbreviated basic procedure is to pull the side panels off the
centre console and detach the heater ducts and vacuum hoses from the box. If
your car is the same as the early turbos, you will have to disassemble the
electrical connector block (it is made to come apart) so you can pull the
wires through the firewall to remove the box.
On the outside, remove the actuating cables and heater hoses from the
box. Remove the metal strap and pry the box loose from the seal. With a
great deal of grunting, mumbling, and inventive invective, remove the box
from the car.
You will need a new seal strip to re-install the box.
