I don't think the pad have to be shot to get sparks from the brakes.  My Ur-q
with G60's and Metalmasters will shoot a shower of sparks from the front wheel
is you brake aggressively from a high speed. I am putting the Porterfields in
this weekend so I will let you know if the same thing happens with them.  I
always assumed that the sparks were coming from the metallic content of the
pads.  I have to say it was pretty funny the first time my brother experienced
this in the Ur-q.  He thought something was terribly wrong.
