Phil:

That is exactly what happened on my strut change, the left side went in
smooth but the right side kept leaning to the rear of the car.

Try this:  center the steering wheel, then - using an assistant - use a two
by four or axe handle (something beefy) to push the spring forward and hold
it there.  Much easier  than trying to finagle it one handed.
