RE: 1996 A4 with 70K plus miles

Well, if Audi-logic holds true, mileage shouldn't be a problem if it was
well cared for and maintained. The owner of this car clearly did A LOT of
driving. If they treated like an appliance and didn't maintain it beyond
the "dealer provided" maintenance, I might be a little hesitant. With 20K+
per year though, you'd expect that the majority of the driving was highway
use - either that or it was a Pizza Delivery vehicle... My opinion is that
"highway use" really does make a difference in most automobiles. The
transmission and/or clutch, brakes, starter, etc. usually fair better
because they're engaged/used less often than in stop-and-go round town
driving. The exhaust fairs better because it's brought up to temp and burns
off water vapor that can rust the exhaust in stop and go, and the engine is
usually better off as well - fewer dry starts, and better lubrication of
bearings, seals, etc. My car was just the opposite - low mileage over a 10
year period, and several components rotted, rusted, and generally broke down
from inactivity. The only question is - will the Audi 10v V6 prove to be as
durable as the I5 and others that listers have racked up 200K on or more.
Perhaps the A4 gurus can be more enlightening.
