Sounds like the blower motor brushes.  About seven months ago, I wrote:

If you are interested in the "Steak Knife" procedure, let me know and I'll
e-mail it to you.  I replaced mine without using the knife.  BTW, I got one
from Blaufernugen for $119 and installed it myself.  I don't do much
maintenance on my Audi myself, but I decided to tackle this job.  It took me
about 3 hours to complete.  If I were to do it again, it would probably take
less than an hour.  Although I'm mechanically inclined, I don't often do
auto repair.  Even so, I found this task relatively routine.
