CV joint.  The boot is there to keep the grease in and the dirt,
water, snow, salt, etc. out.  What has probably happened is that the boot
has been torn for awhile, the grease in the joint is gone; and you have
the clunk.

My 87 4000 q was notorious for tearing boots, but only on the RF side.  

I have always let the pros handle replacing CV joints because it is a
messy job.  But I also claim that I am the least mechanically competent
member of the q list.
