4000 Headlight Switch

The headlight switch on my 1985 4000S Quattro is going South on
me.  I'm not sure if the contacts are just misaligned, but for some
reason if you turn the switch all the way forward the dash lights all
come on, but the headlights turn off- you have to back off the fully
forward postion by about 1/8 turn to get both to engage simultaneously.
With no detent in that position, it tends to slip out of place and the
headlights shut off (and without Euro's it can be hard to tell!).

In any case, I'm looking for advice on how to pull this switch off (I
didn't want to break anything by pulling too hard without knowing how
it was supposed to come off) and once I have it off, how to repair it.
