Phil,
If you are doing it with help, one of you can press down and the other locks
the nut. If you are doing it alone and want to use a spring compressor, get
one at a harbor Freight tool shop or Jcwhitney, it is cheap ($11-15).
If you are doing "lowered springs" it is easier, if you are doing OEM
springs you might have to use a spring compressor.

I recall hearing it's necessary to use a spring compressor when changing
out the rear shocks. But a friend tells me he can do this without a
compressor. Did I hear right? Anyway, I don't seem to have a procedure for
rear shocks in my archive. Does anyone have one that they can send? For a
'91 200q.
