@*$#$&%@!! voltmeter

After I finished tearing everything relating to the dash and charging system
apart trying to fix my lazy voltmeter with no success, the wife took the car
through the car wash. Poof - the alternator dies - no current - flat-line!

Took it to a local highly recommended starter/alternator shop and for
$145/CDN had it rebuilt. Their bench test showed over 110amps output at
'normal' operating rpm. I out it back in and have excellent voltage readings
every where on the car with my digimeter except for the @*$#$&%@!!
voltmeter. It still moves only a bit off the left rest position.

I'm going to pull the dash out and put a 12 volt current directly to the
gauge but I'm sure that it will perform flawlessly. Any ideas as to what
might be the problem? Hairline crack at a solder joint somewhere?

Any input would be appreciated.
