Go the cheap route first and check the compression.  It takes about 3 minutes
and any decent mechanic can do it.  Next, if compression is good, that means
that most likely there is no valve damage.  In this case, I would install a
good used or new injector to see if that works.  Check the plug as well, but
if compression is good it is most likely a plug or injector.  The exact same
thing as you descibed happened last about 3 months ago to my rabbit, we tuned
it up and that didn't work (checked the motor just like you did) and it turned
out to be a clogged injector, most likely from one of those additives I added
to the gas lines (STP, I think it was...)  Good luck!
