Re: 5kt slush box shifting

Jason's point about the torque converter is a good one. If the torque
converter wasn't changed, then all the crud that was in it will be circulated
through the new trans parts, so they may not last very long.

In addition, one of the main reason lots of these trannies fail is
due to the failure of the final drive. Older units are more prone to "boil
dry" than newer ones because, in theory, the newer ones have synthetic diff
oil that doesn't evaporate.
Did your buddy check the level of fluid in the final drive? Did he
take out all the old stuff and replace it with synthetic? That's mandatory,
especially with the older (before 1989) cars.
And there's a possibility that the trans was put together
incorrectly. When we had my son's slushbox rebuilt a while back they had to
pull it back out TWICE because one of the seals was broken and it would not
upshift properly from 2 to 3. Since they were the ones that did the rebuild,
they also had to make good on the additional R&Rs.
Since your guy did what the customer asked (direct swap of trans
only), it's almost impossible to know what the trouble is. So a complete
removal and inspection is the only way to know for certain if the problem is
in the trans or the final drive.

	Later.
