Actually, since about '94 (feel free to correct me) there has
been a standard format for interfacing with the fault codes
of the computer on vehicles.  The interface itself is called
a scantool.  You used to have to get a different one for each
manufacturer (and still do for anything older than '94 with a
few exceptions).  Someone actually is in the process of
writing a GPL'ed open source program for X/Gnome that will
connect your computer to this interface, with the right cable,
and serve as a scantool.  Here is the web site about the
