It's always been my belief that the reported problems were most likely
caused by seal deswelling. The opposite behavior (more swelling) is
difficult to reconcile with leakage.

So I wonder: did that engineer claim they (synthetics) no longer _swell_
the seals as they used to, or did he say that they no longer *de*swell the
seals?????

And, pray tell, when did "modern" set in?
