With extreme prejudice.  I have a pair of water-pump pliers that can be
adjusted so the minimum jaw spacing is less than the diameter of the
shaft.

Never seen why it was glued on in the first place.

Make sure the replacement has:

a) The correct resistance

b) The correct width at the end of the arm.
