Ignition Rotor Removal



How do you get the rotor off the distributor shaft in a 2.3L gasoline 
5 cylinder naturally aspirated engine (1988 5KS)?  It does not want 
to come off.  The Audi dealer parts guy said that it might be one of 
those which require you to break it in order to get it off.  He says 
the mechanics crunch away at them with pliers.  If that is the case, 
should the new one be Loctited on?  Audi sure has some strange design 
philosophies.  TIA
